How to care for hand-painted wooden coasters

A hand-painted wooden coaster is a natural wood disc painted with acrylics and finished with a protective seal. That seal makes it water-resistant but not waterproof: it will shrug off condensation from a cold glass, and it will be ruined by soaking or a dishwasher cycle. Clean it with a damp cloth, dry it at once, and keep it out of direct sun.

   Wipe with a damp cloth

   Use a soft cloth with a little water. Skip washing-up liquid: detergents cut through the protective seal over time, which is what keeps moisture out of the wood.

   Dry immediately

   Dry both faces with a dry cloth rather than leaving them to air-dry. Wood swells where water sits, and swelling under a painted surface is what makes paint lift at the edges.

   Never put them in the dishwasher

   A dishwasher combines prolonged soaking with heat above 60 °C. That is the single fastest way to ruin a painted wooden coaster: the seal softens, the wood expands, and the paint crazes.

   Keep them out of direct sunlight

   Acrylic pigment fades under sustained UV. A coaster left on a sunlit windowsill for a summer will lose contrast; the same coaster kept on a table will not.

   Store them flat

   Stack them flat with nothing heavy on top, somewhere that stays at room humidity. Stored on edge in a damp cupboard, wood cups slightly and no longer sits flat on the table.

Why paint lifts at the edges

Wood moves with humidity — it takes on water and expands, then dries and contracts. Paint and sealant move far less. When a coaster is soaked, the wood swells underneath a layer that cannot stretch with it, and the bond gives way at the weakest point, which is always an edge. This is why drying matters more than washing gently: the damage comes from how long water sits, not from the cloth you use.
